The south Salinas Valley has the highest percentage of families in poverty (15.3%) in the state of California. There are 23 distinct languages spoken at NMC, and more than 1 in 3 patients has low literacy in their native language. One in five patients has less than a 9th grade education, and more than 40% are monolingual Spanish-speakers.
